Michelle Alozie’s late goal sends Nigeria Super Falcons to the WAFCON 2025 final.
Nigeria beat South Africa 2-1 in their semi final clash in Casablanca to reach the final. The match looked set for extra time until Michelle Alozie’s late goal sealed victory for the Falcons.
Having defeated Senegal after extra time in the quarter finals, defending champions South Africa had one more hurdle standing between them and the WAFCON final.
Bayana Bayana started a bit shaky with the Falcons dominating the opening minutes. That early dominance resulted in a couple of chances that they couldn’t convert. South Africa’s goalkeeper Dlamini saved a shot from Esther Okoronkwo in the 11th minute and Tiisetso Makhubela blocked Chinwendu Ihezuo’s follow up from going in.
Nigeria took the lead however as they were awarded a penalty just before half time. Ijamilusi fired an effort into the left hand of Mbane and Rashidat Ajibade converted the resulting penalty kick to put the Super Falcons ahead.
Bayana Bayana came out improved in the second half but almost gifted Nigeria a second goal following a goalkeeping mistake. Just before the hour mark, they won a penalty after a VAR review. Motlhalo stepped up and sent Chiamaka Nnadozie the wrong way from the spot to level the score for South Africa.
Ohale’s clearance in the 73rd minute kept Noxolo Cesane’s game effort from going over the line. Nigeria eventually found a winner late on in dramatic fashion.
Michelle Alozie’s long ball forward bounced outside the box and over the goalkeeper into the back of the net amid pressure from Abiodun and Ihezuo. A goal that sent the Super Falcons into the finals where they’d be looking to win their 10th WAFCON title. Mission X remains on track! They will face the winner of Morocco vs Ghana.
