WAFCON: Hosts Morocco into finals after shootout win over Ghana

Morocco come from behind to beat Ghana on penalties; sets up final showdown with Nigeria 

It will be Nigeria vs Morocco in the 2025 WAFCON finals on Saturday. The hosts overcame Ghana on penalties to reach the final. They will be hoping to win their first WAFCON trophy against Nigeria who beat South Africa earlier in the day.

Ghana were the better team in a nervy first half, dominating proceedings and creating several chances. These chances went begging as the West Africans failed to convert, with Morocco’s goalkeeper Er-Rmichi making a string of saves. However, Ghana soon found the opener through Nyamekye. A long ball forward was met by Josephine Bonsu, who forced a fine reflex save from Er-Rmichi with a powerful header. Nyamekye was on hand to slot home the rebound to put Ghana in front.

Morocco had penalty shouts when captain Ghizlane Chebbak went down in the box under scrutiny from Ghana’s Susan Duah but the referee was not having it.

The hosts came out rejuvenated in the second half and took control of the game. Ouzraoui found the equaliser, finishing past Ghana’s goalkeeper Cynthia Konlan. Ghana missed a glorious opportunity to win it in the first half of extra time. Er-Rmichi parried Yeboah’s speculative shot and there was Badu so close to turning in the rebound.

Morocco came out on top in the shootout, winning 4-2 to head into Saturday’s final on home turf. They will face Nigeria in the final while Ghana and South Africa will battle it out for third place.
